Art Day #1: Tempera Cakes

Materials:

  • Tempera cakes
  • Variety of brushes
  • Two jars of water
  • Paper towels
  • Sponge
  • Painting paper

Preparation:

None required

What we did:

  • Learned how to get nice colors with the tempera cakes
    • Use just a little water
    • Go round and round to make the paint creamy
  • Learned how to keep the tempera cakes clean
    • When switching colors,
      • Wipe the brush on a paper towel
      • Swish the brush in the jar of cleaning water, wiping the brush on the bottom of the jar
      • Tap the brush on the sponge to get off excess water
      • Before picking up yellow or white paint, you might want to dip the brush into the second clean water jar first, and then tap off
    • At the end of the painting session dab the top of the dirty cakes with a damp paper towel
  • Learned what kind of marks different brushes make
  • Painted ice cones — crayon cones, painted ice cream
  • Painted an outdoor scene of a tree with green and yellow leaves, blue sky, green grass and red flowers.
